Tortilla

Hey guys, it’s Ella! I’m here today to tell you about my favourite Spanish food that I recently discovered : tortilla de patata. 

What is tortilla de patata?

Tortilla de patata is a fat omelette with egg, onion and potatoes. It looks like a quiche without a crust. It is quite often salty and served with bread. Although this may sound weird, you get used to it and it’s very good.

My first tortilla experience

The first time I had tortilla was when we were having tapas in Logroño. I wasn’t too sure about it but I was pleasantly surprised and now it is my favourite Spanish food.

Different ways tortilla can be served

Typically, tortilla is served in a triangle, a bit like a pizza slice. However, some restaurants/tapas bars make individual circle ones, like the one I had in Madrid.

You can also buy and entire tortilla in a pizza box.

    Ella, thank you for teaching me about Tortilla de patata. I've never heard of it and it sounds delicious. Do you think if I found a recipe and made it at home, I could make it with a little less salt without affecting the taste too much? Is it ever served with a sauce like salsa or ketchup?

      Yes, you can definitely make it without salt. If you want to add a sauce, you can, but I never saw it served with sauce.

    Hi Ella! I loved learning about your new favourite food, and I think I would love to try it too! Is it filling enough to eat on its own or with bread or would you eat it with other dishes too?

    Hi Ella! I loved reading about your favourite Spanish food - Tortilla! It is one of my favourite Spanish food as well :-). Caelan's grandma makes a really good one and we'll be sure to bring a piece over for you when you get back to Halifax.

Starting off

About five and a half years ago, we made the decision to take an adventure of a lifetime with our kids. They were still so young at the time (aged 5 and 2) and imagining them as older kids was next to impossible. But we knew that by 2025, they'd have grown up and they'd be at a great age to take on a trip of this magnitude. So in January 2020, we started saving. I was able to do it through a deferred salary program that my employer offers. It means that every paycheque a portion of my salary is put away so that over the six months of my leave, I'll still be getting paid. Jon had to save on his own. As a self-employed medical professional, he also had to get permission from the hospital he works at to take a leave.
