Kick off: Paris Day 1

We arrived around 10:30 am and headed to our Airbnb in Montparnasse. We had a bite to eat and a nap, then headed off to explore. One of the first things we came upon, which was a total surprise to us all, was the Olympic flame. This was very exciting because the kids had seen it on tv last summer, and it was the one thing I regrettably missed while I was here working at the Games. It turns out the city decided to bring it back in June and will leave it in the Tuileries Gardens until September. Bonus!

We also discovered a fair happening all summer in the Tuileries Gardens, which included a Ferris wheel. We decided to wait till after it got a bit dark to go on it, so we headed for dinner first. I love the disposable paper placemats at the restaurant. This meant we could play a version of French Hangman while we waited for our food, which involves drawing … a pig? This is how Ella plays at school. Slightly less violent than hanging a human, I guess.

When we got back to the fair, it wasn’t dark yet, but it was sunset, and despite the clouds, we had an incredible view of the sun going down over Paris. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. This was one of those unplanned moments, which turned out to be a real win 🙌🏻.

    Hi Nomadic Four. It's Your Uncle John / Best Friend / Best Rival here. The story unfolding before us (and the Internets) is truly joyful, inspiring, and educational. Your West Coast Found Family will be eagerly consuming your updates and I'm sure that the #Hornboys will ask some really good questions.

    While you're in France, I'd love to see a lineup related eye-roll from The Girl, Sabrina-Jon Romance, and/or The Boy challenging some locals to a game of street hockey (I feel like this could be a recurring theme for your community-engagement).

These are the most common questions we get asked when we tell people about our trip. We are going to: France, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Japan, Indonesia and New Zealand. Starting off

About five and a half years ago, we made the decision to take an adventure of a lifetime with our kids. They were still so young at the time (aged 5 and 2) and imagining them as older kids was next to impossible. But we knew that by 2025, they'd have grown up and they'd be at a great age to take on a trip of this magnitude. So in January 2020, we started saving. I was able to do it through a deferred salary program that my employer offers. It means that every paycheque a portion of my salary is put away so that over the six months of my leave, I'll still be getting paid. Jon had to save on his own. As a self-employed medical professional, he also had to get permission from the hospital he works at to take a leave. Lucky for him, his boss had done something similar just a few years before — in fact, she was part of our inspiration for this crazy trip — and she agreed.
